Discography Artist: Stephanie McKay

Stephanie McKay is a singer, songwriter and master performer & is one of the most in-demand voices on the scene today. Hailing from the Bronx NYC, her list of credits is long and impressive and reads like a "who's who" of the hip-hop/soul scene. Formerly a guitarist for Kelis, she has recorded two albums with the Brooklyn Funk Essentials, collaborated with Talib Kweli and Mos Def, featured on the standout hit “Forget Regret” from Roy Hargrove’s Grammy-nominated RH Factor (alongside such luminaries as D’Angelo, Anthony Hamilton, Erykah Badu, Karl Denson, Pino Palladino, and Common) and completed a world tour with Amp Fiddler from the legendary Parliament Funkadelic.. Aside from her many collaborations, it is on her impressive solo material that Stephanie's star shines brightest. Her debut solo album 'McKay' produced by Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, was released in Europe on Polydor/Universal and garnered major critical acclaim. In the UK, 'The Independent' called the album "…the best debut since Macy Gray" and 'Black Beat' referred to McKay as "…the savior we need to drag rhythm back to its roots." Two singles and two videos were released from the album and received heavy rotation on the radio and MTV Europe. Equally at home on the stage or in the studio, Stephanie has performed extensively in the New York area, completed two national tours in Australia and maintained an unprecedented seven-night stand in Greece. She's one of the hardest working performers on the scene today so keep your ear to the ground for shows in your area, her live performances are not to be missed!! Always developing as an artist & constantly looking forward, this summer will see the release of her highly anticipated 2nd album 'Tell It Like It Is'. The wheels on the music media 'hype machine' are already well in motion worldwide, and if her debut was anything to go by this could be the musical event of summer 2008! Make no mistake, Stephanie McKay is the real deal.... And she’s only just getting started !!!

Stephanie McKay - McKay (2003)
New York songwriter Stephanie McKay has been keeping a low profile up to now, despite having performed with such luminaries as Tricky, Kelis and Mos Def. Thankfully, she's finally got around to making her solo debut - and the result is one of the very best soul albums you'll hear all year. Unlike many so-called divas, McKay realises that you don't have to scream the house down to get your point across, and her languid vocals work a treat on this lavish concoction of brooding funk and elegant trip-hop. The tasteful addition of squelchy beats and scratchy vinyl grooves, meanwhile, makes perfect sense when you realise that the production duties are handled by Geoff Barrow of Portishead fame. The result is a blissful fusion of classical and modern soul music that heralds the arrival of an exciting new talent. © Andrew Lynch, Entertainment.ie

Stephanie McKay - Tell It Like It Is (2008)
It has been five years since Geoff Barrow took a break from searching for Portishead’s new sound to luxuriate in Stephanie McKay’s old-school variety by co-producing her debut album. There are no big-name collaborators for McKay this time round, but she clearly doesn’t need any. The musical recipe for Tell It Like It Is consists of equal parts late1960s soul and early1970s funk, effortlessly combining the social conscience of the former with the musical freedom of the latter. There is also a smidgen of hip-hop, but only in the sound, not the attitude; when McKay sings a song called Money, it’s about not how much she has, or what she would like to spend it on, but the way it messes with people’s lives. You might argue that nobody actually writes letters any more, but that won’t stop you swooning when McKay sings “I hope you get this letter some way” on the standout track, This Letter. ©
